- Rock fragmentation is the most important index in estimation of effects of production blasting in surface mining operations. The degree of rock fragmentation has a great impact on the efficiency of further operations loading, hauling, crushing, and grinding. The optimum rock fragmentation in production blasting effects on the reduction of overall production costs. Therefore, the reliable evaluation of fragmentation size of blasted rock mass is very important issue not only in blasting operations but also in mining production. To predict the fragment size distribution of blasted rock mass there are various empirical models. The KUZ-RAM model enables the prediction of fragment size distribution of blasted rock based on the blasting parameters and rock properties. Beside empirical prediction models, there are also various software for the analysis of fragment size distribution of blasted rock mass after the blast. The determination of rock fragmentation using image analysis techniques has widely applied because of its usefulness. Split-Desktop by Split Engineering is one of digital image processing software developed to analyse and compute the size distribution of fragmented rock mass from digital images. Digital images acquired in the field are manually scaled and edited by Split-Desktop to obtain the optimum accuracy. The images are further analysed to determine the fragment size distribution of blasted rock mass.
